• Every instance in Cloud is created using information from Master Lessons and Master Courses.
• When a new instance is created, Cloud creates a copy of the master course within that institution. 
  • The new instance contains the most recent published version of the master course (universal settings, SKU, lesson list, and supplemental documents) and the most recent published version of each master lesson listed in the master course.
• When an existing instance is cloned,Cloud again creates a copy of the master course, and then applies the previous section's customizations.
  • Customizations: When a section is cloned, all lesson notes, custom lessons, question customization, gradebook weights, and lesson orders will be carried over from the source section.
    • If there is a conflict in those settings between the master course and the source section, the settings in the source section take priority.
  • Content Updates: Every time a section is cloned, all lesson content, the complete lesson list, and specific master course settings will be carried over from the master course and master lessons, not the source section.
    • If there a conflict in the lesson content between the source section and the master lesson, the content from the master lesson has priority.

1. Existing instance A is cloned
2. Cloud pulls the current lesson list, settings, supplemental documents, and lesson content from both the Master Lessons and the Master Course and populates them into Instance B
3. Cloud then references the customization settings from Instance A and applies them to Instance B. These settings include the following:
   1. Instructor Notes
   2. Question Customization (Hidden questions, new questions, etc.)
   3. Custom Lesson Authoring
   4. Grade Weights
   5. Lesson Order
   6. Hidden/shown lessons in the lesson list
   7. Time zone preferences
4. Cloud does not clone Access dates.
5. Instance B now has all current updates from the master lessons and master course, as well as the previous customizations made in Instance A.

When cloning directly from Cloud, the section cloned from will be the section that is selected in the institution

When cloning via LTI, the section that is cloned will be the most recent section of that SKU taught by that instructor. If it’s a new instructor, it will be the most recent section of that SKU taught in that institution

• This is a temporary rule. It is a limitation of LTI 1.1, and we are currently working on our LTI 1.3 build-out to make sure Cloud clones from the same section that is referenced in the section that cloned from the LMS, as opposed to the most recent section in Cloud.

• All newly created and newly cloned courses should contain the most current published version of the master lesson
• When a change is made and published in a master lesson, the following rules apply:
  • When published as a “Hot Fix”, the change applies to all future instances and to all existing instances that have not yet had students make progress in that lesson. Any instances that have had students make progress in the updated lesson will not receive the update until that instance is cloned into a new instance.
  • When published as a “Clone,” all of the changes are moved into a new master lesson with a separate SKU, and the original lesson remains the same as the previous published version. No active instances are affected.
  • When published as “Next Adoption,” The change applies only to all future instances and clones of courses containing that lesson. No existing instances are affected, whether or not they have had student progress
  • When published as “Schedule,” changes are applied with the same logic as “next adoption,” but after a certain date, instead of immediately upon publication (we do not use this feature).
• All customization to lesson, questions, and instructor notes that are made within individual instances are applied on top of the updated master lesson.

• All newly created instances of a master course should reflect the most current version of the master course settings (lesson list, universal settings, supplemental documents, SKU, etc.) AND the most current version of each lesson within the master course at the time the instance is created.
• All changes made and published to a master course show up only in future instances created or cloned. No master course-level changes are pushed to live sections, regardless of student progress.
  • Note that changes to individual lesson content are applied according to the publication method selecting when updating that individual lesson

• No clones or new instances of any master course can be created after the master course’s End Date (if any) has passed.
  • Once the End Date has passed, the clone buttons within individual instances of that master course are deactivated and the master course does not show up in the list of available SKUs when created a new instance
• If a lesson has been sunset, it can no longer be added to any master courses, but existing instances of master courses that use that lesson may still be cloned and used with that lesson’s content.
