All eScience Labs digital curriculum can be integrated into LMS (Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle, etc.) courses using course cartridges. Course cartridges are assigned to instructors who wish to integrate/embed ESL content into their LMS courses. Course cartridges work by uploading a file into the LMS that embeds our content into the LMS course. These files can only be viewed/read after being uploaded into an LMS. Unlike HOL/SI integrations, course cartridges do not transfer grades or track any student data. Course cartridges are available for individual labs, as well as for all standard kits. As a result, course cartridge uploads allow for students/professors to have access ONLY to the lessons that are included in their kit.
Most subjects in eScience Labs digital curriculum has question banks that can uploaded into LMS (Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle, etc.) courses. ESL question banks are formatted into multiple file types, including Word documents and files compatible with individual LMS. The correct file types are distinguished in the educator resources section. Once question bank files have uploaded into an LMS, instructors can access/utilize them within the LMS's built-in assessment builder/tool. Within the LMS's assessment tool, instructors are able to edit or remove questions from the question banks.
The eScience Labs digital curriculum is built in Storyline. The digital curriculum includes a mix of written content, images, and interactives to support student understanding of the topic at hand. Unlike the HOL/SI content which gives students an understanding of the topics they need to know for the experimentation section, the eScience Labs content is more expansive and designed around the assumption that students may not have a textbook or lecture components. The digital curriculum does include multiple choice questions, but these are not graded and are simply included for the students to check their understanding.
The protocols for the eScience Labs experiments are included at the end of the introductory content. These are PDF documents. All of the protocols begin with a brief overview of what will be done in the experiment and the list of materials (kit- and student-supplied) required for the experiment. This is followed by the experiment protocols, which may include additional videos and photos showing how to perform the experiment.
For each lab, the data tables and pre- and post-lab questions for all experiments are included in a Microsoft Word document. These are included at the end of the introductory content. Students can download the document and record their answers. These are typically submitted in a drop box within the learning management system.
Teacher manuals for each standard kit are available on the educator portal. These are PDF documents. They contain the answers to all pre- and post-lab questions, as well as the data tables. They do not include answers to the multiple choice questions in the introductory content.
Case studies are available for faculty members to use on the educator portal. These are short descriptions of real-world scenarios, and include 5-7 additional questions for students to apply their knowledge from the lab kits. They also generally require students to perform additional research. These are an optional addition to the curriculum for faculty to use as is relevant to their course.
The lab kits for eScience Labs include all of the materials that are required to complete the experiments selected by the instructor. Note that the eScience Labs curriculum can and has been customized at both the lesson and the experiment level. eScience Labs kits also include a mixture of hands-on and virtual activities.
