Science-Initiated Materials Change

Updated on

This process pertains only to materials changes originating from the Science team. If Purchasing is initiating the materials change, follow these instructions.

This process would be used when Science revises existing lessons.

All kit materials changes that do not align with the item's product specification sheet must be approved by the Science team.

With the exception of emergency shortages, all materials changes should be completed three months before curriculum launch date.

1. Science notifies Purchasing of potential materials change and expected launch date.

2. Science acquires new material samples as required for curriculum development.

3. Science tests samples and designs experiments around these materials.

4. BOM manager creates part numbers for new items in curriculum.

5. Science writes complete product specification sheet for each new item.

6. Specification sheets sent to purchasing at least three months before curriculum launch date.

7. Purchasing sources vendors for new items and sends sample to science for approval.

8. Science evaluates samples and notifies purchasing of approval status.

9. Upon item approval, Purchasing acquires materials based on projections.

10. Acquired materials are compared to product specification sheets upon arrival at warehouse to assure quality control.
