Process Overview: Content/Curriculum Development

Updated on

Every lesson at Hands-On Labs goes through a rigorous development and review process before it can be published. We are committed to providing high-quality science labs, and our multi-step development process is designed to ensure we meet those standards.

1. Discipline Lesson Selection

Our Science team identifies which labs should be included in our discipline library based on extensive research, faculty input, and syllabi reviews. The list of potential labs is then reviewed by current faculty members at colleges and universities around the nation.

2. Lesson Development

Our team of PhD scientists writes and designs the experimentation, exploration, and evaluation sections for each lesson.

This process begins by designing the experiment and procedures. Our team will determine whether the concept being explored is best covered through hands-on experimentation or a digital laboratory. The experimental learning objectives and protocol are then developed and extensively tested for quality, safety, and repeatability.

Based on the experiment, the exploration content is then developed. This introductory content is not designed to be a substitute for a lecture course. Instead, it encompasses all the necessary information required for the students to complete the experiments.

Finally, a variety of questions are developed that closely tie into the learning objectives for the experimentation, exploration, and evaluation sections, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge and achievement of the lesson outcomes.

3. Scientist Review

The lessons are sent to another PhD scientist on our team for an internal review, ensuring that the curriculum meets our rigorous curriculum development standards.

4. Instructional Design Review

Our instructional designer reviews the lessons for usability and instructional design standards, making sure that all the HOL Cloud settings are correct, answers are marked appropriately, images and videos work, and ADA standards are met.

5. Board of Advisor Review

Each lesson is sent to two to three members of our Board of Advisors for separate reviews. To be eligible to review a lesson, Board of Advisors members must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be active, current professors at a college or university
  2. Have expertise in the subject matter of the lesson(s) they will review
  3. Have experience teaching online science laboratories.

6. Copy Edit and Technical Writing Review

The lessons are sent to our Technical Writing team for a top-to-bottom copy edit and technical writing review.

7. Final Approval

In this final quality control stage, our Curriculum Development Manager performs a comprehensive overview of the curriculum to ensure that it meets all of our standards and is fully ready for use by students and faculty.

8. Publication and Continuous Improvement

The published lesson is now available for use by institutions and students. Even after publication, we continually review our content to correct anything that may have been missed during development, and we integrate feedback from instructors and students. We are committed to providing the best experience for our users, so we view all of our content as an ongoing improvement project.
