Discontinuing a Kit

Follow these steps to discontinue a kit for the following reasons:

  • Kit is revised or versioned up. (Product Manager, Chief Academic Officer, Sales Team)
    • Factor in timing, financial ramifications, inventory (Product Manager, Chief Academic Officer, General Manager, Production Planning Manager, Accounting Manager)
  • Kit has low/no sales for a specified time period after each semester (General Manager)

1. Apply the Obsolete Kit template on the item card. Check the "Discontinued" box.

2. Review all locations for kit inventory.

  1. If inventory exists, notify the breakdown team. (Production Planning Manager, COO, Senior Production Manager, Inventory Manager, Warehouse Manager, QC Manager)
    1. Review timing for breakdown (General Manager)
    2. Follow the breakdown process.
      1. Pull the kits. (Warehouse manager)
      2. Determine man-hours for breakdown. (Senior Production Manager)
      3. Breakdown the kits.
      4. Update Inventory. (Inventory Manager)
      5. Notify Product Engineering that breakdown is complete (Inventory Manager)
  2. When notified the breakdown is complete and the inventory is 0, complete the obsoleting process. (Proceed to step 3)

2.1. Review kit BOM for any unique items that are not used in any other product.

  1. Check the Discontinued box.
  2. Submit the item as Obsolete in the Inventory Control list.
  3. If the unique item appears in a family planning BOM, open the family planning BOM and delete the item from the BOM

2.2. Review discontinued kit and unique subassemblies for any outstanding production orders.

Notify the Production Planning Manager, COO, and Senior Production Manager of the outstanding production order and item number so the production order can be canceled.

2.3. Review unique items for any outstanding purchase orders.

Notify Purchasing Department of outstanding purchase orders for items that will no longer be use so they can be canceled if possible.

3. Complete the obsoleting process

  1. If the kit is replaced with a different kit or versioned up, type “Replace with Item # *new kit #*” into the Description 1, Long Description, and the ESL description field.
  2. Check the Blocked box.
  3. Type OBSOLETE or “Replace with Item # *new kit #*” into the block reason field.
  4. Open the Production BOM.
  5. Select status “Closed”
  6. Type a note that states the date, "Closed," your name, "Kit is Obsolete."
