About the V-Scope

The HOL V-Scope is an advanced virtual microscope program that simulates the use of a compound light microscope and includes a library of over 80 fully interactive slides ranging from bacteria to fruit flies to skeletal muscle.

Using advanced technology and images from real slides, the V-Scope replicates everything that a student would do on a physical microscope, including raising and lowering the platform, turning on the light, placing, centering, and focusing slides, and more.

Talking points

  • Replicates the experience and procedures of a physical microscope so students still learn how to operate the machine without having to purchase and ship a physical one
  • An excellent addition to online science courses
  • Includes access to over 80 fully-interactive slides. Each slide consists of hundreds of images from real slides all compiled together to recreate the full experience of moving the slide, zooming in/out, focusing, etc.
  • Students can download their slide images for easy labeling and submission
  • Instructors can use just the V-Scope or they can add authoring access to create their own lessons using the award-winning HOL Cloud platform

Key Details on Standalone V-Scope Access

The standalone V-Scope option (meaning the student purchases access to the V-Scope but isn't using any HOL lessons or purchasing a kit) is available with or without the Custom-Lesson Authoring feature.

  • This new offering allows customers to purchase access to the V-Scope without having to purchase a kit or use any of our content.
  • These options do not come with any HOL-authored lessons except for "Using the V-Scope" and "Getting Started" (Getting Started only if the school adds custom-lesson authoring)
  • Students can purchase access through Cloud's Shopping Cart or by using Vouchers
  • Price without Custom-Lesson Authoring is $50.00 per student (LP-9500-MB-01)
  • Price with Custom-Lesson Authoring is $55.00 per student  (LP-9501-MB-01)

Options

Without Custom-Lesson Authoring  (SKU  LP-9500-MB-01)

  • Instructors will not be able to author their own lessons for students
  • The HOL Cloud course will include only the Using the V-Scope instructional lesson for students to complete

With Custom-Lesson Authoring  (SKU LP-9501-MB-01)

  • Instructors will be able to add their own lessons to build out a full course within HOL Cloud if they choose
  • The HOL Cloud course will include both the Getting Starting and Using the V-Scope lessons

Questions and Answers

Expand or collapse content What kits can we add the V-Scope to?

V-Scope can be added to any kit with a SKU that starts with LP-. It can replace the physical microscope in any lesson we offer and is an excellent, cost-effective option for instructors who don't need their students to purchase or ship expensive microscopes.

Expand or collapse content Can schools just get access to the V-Scope without buying a kit or using our lessons?

Yes! See this section above for information on this option.

Expand or collapse content Can instructors add their own slides to the V-Scope?

No. In order for the V-Scope to be fully interactive, each slide consists of hundreds of individual high-resolution photographs of a real-life slide in a microscope. Customers are free to suggest additions to our slide library, but we don't make any promises about adding them at any point.

Expand or collapse content My customer wants to add the V-Scope to a kit they're already using. What do I do now?

The V-Scope functions more like a material in a kit than just a software feature on Cloud, which means it cannot just be "turned on" for an individual section or course! It has to be quoted and the SKU has to built in Cloud to support the V-Scope from the start.

  • If it's a StemPaq kit (SKUs starting with SP-), they don't need to add V-scope (see question below)
  • If it's an LP- kit, you'll need to re-quote it using the V-Scope versions of the lessons and adding the V-Scope charge so that the price (and materials list!) reflects the removal of the physical microscope and the addition of the V-Scope.
  • A kit/master course are not engineered with both V-scope and prepared slides. If an instructor requires both V-scope and prepared slides, the cost of the V-scope must be added to the kit.
  • Since the materials in the kit are changing, the kit and course will need to be versioned up.
Expand or collapse content Can I add V-Scope to a StemPaq Course?

You don't need to! StemPaq courses (the ones with SKUs starting with SP-) were designed to be as cost-effective as possible, which means they don't use microscopes in the first place. Instead, all StemPaq course lessons have the relevant slide images embedded directly into the content.
