Overview
Starting from the basics of nursing process and covering a wide range of critical clinical skills, the SI nursing lab kits and curriculum present clear and concise exercises that will support student preparation for entering the clinic. A combination of virtual and tactile activities will allow students to use real medical equipment to perform the key skills they need as nurses. The SI nursing kits were designed to provide students and faculty with improved digital learning resources to further increase student learning outcomes and improve the overall student experience.
Course Level
Our nursing curriculum is designed for use in ASN and BSN programs. They would best align with an Introduction to Nursing, Clinical Nursing Skills, or Fundamentals of Nursing courses. Many of these skills are covered in CNA and Medical Assisting programs, and may be applicable there as well.

- Authentic Materials for True-to-Life Training Experience
- All hands-on labs incorporate authentic materials similar those to available on-site in clinics. This includes glucometers, pulse oximeters, thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, needles, etc. Students are also supplied with simulated arms and skin to practice blood draws and injections.

- Interactive Introductory Content
- Ever lab incorporates at least one interactive (animation, summary image, interactive activity, etc.) in the exploration to increase student engagement with the curriculum. These are designed to blend seamlessly with the curriculum and are always called out ahead o time in the paragraph prior with directions as to how to interact.

- Digital Experiments
- Digital experiments have been developed to support soft skills and provide experience with materials that cannot be shipped. These include Pain Assessment, Medical Terminology, Nursing Process, and Using Automated Medication Dispensing Systems.

- Safety
- A safety overview is required in all courses, and includes a safety video, contract, and all relevant information for students ahead of beginning their experiments./
- Performing Blood Draws
- This lab is one of the highlights of the kit. Students focus on the key techniques in phlebotomy, learning how to perform blood draws using a model arm. This is an essential skill, and one of the most impressive labs in the full nursing discipline.
- Students begin the lab by learning how to identify a vein to perform a blood draw. For this activity, they will work with a partner to walk through how to palpate and identify the vein. From there, students will move into performing the blood draw on the model arm.
- Materials for this lab include the model arm, needles, tubing, sharps container, and blood collection vials. The lab also includes a great video to show off.
- Blood Glucose Testing
- Another essential skill lab that has authentic materials included for the students to use.
- In the lab, students will work with a partner to perform blood glucose testing before and after fasting. Students will actually draw a small amount of blood and take readings of their partner.
- Materials include the glucometer, lancet, and PPE. There is also a very nice video in this lab.
Carolina
- Carolina does not offer a nursing kit under their distance learning brand. They do have allied health labs available, but they would not meet the scope of a nursing lab - they are pulled from their basic science materials.
Labster
- Labster's nursing simulation line is called UbiSIM. It is a well regarded leader in VR-based nursing education, and is the top selling product at Labster currently.
- These simulations are highly customizable - faculty can use the simulation as-is or changing just about any parameter within the program.
- As set up today, VR headsets are required to use this software. An instructor runs the simulation and up to three students can participate within the simulated experience.
- Largely scenario based - students are presented with a clinical scenario and must use clinical judgment to determine the best course of action. There is no hands-on experience with utilizing the tools within the clinic.
