Kortext

Updated on

Kortext partners with schools, bookstores, and publishers to catalogue and distribute digital course materials. Schools can opt to offer delivery through Kortext for Inclusive Access courses or for regular code delivery as a bookstore partner. Kortext is particularly prevalent among UK and international institutions and is the preferred partner for schools with strong accessibility or DEI requirements.

Adoption Process

If Kortext is mentioned or designated during the adoption process, do not quote a final price to the school. Kortext pricing is subject to mark-ups for their services and final pricing will be available once the product is set up in the Kortext system.

When an instructor or bookstore sends a request to adopt a product through Kortext, the rep should request the following information:

  1. The product number/ISBN for the course
  2. The school/institution name as it appears in Kortext
  3. Enrollment estimate

Once this information is received, send to the sales support team to complete product metadata setup and code import via the Kortext FTP site.

Timing: Metadata and code setup should be requested at least 30 days before course start to ensure codes are loaded and available on Day 1. Flag urgent timelines to sales support immediately.

Product Setup in Kortext

In order for a product to be adopted by a school for distribution through Kortext, the product must be set up in the Kortext system first. Setup is handled via SFTP file import rather than a web-based management portal.

There are two key pieces of the product setup:

  1. Product Metadata — Completed using the Kortext Metadata Template Excel file and uploaded to the /IA-catalogue or /courseware folder on the Kortext SFTP server.
  2. Codes — Voucher codes are prepared using the Courseware Codebank Template Excel file and uploaded to the /codebank folder on the SFTP server. Load codes with a 10–15% buffer above the enrollment estimate to account for late adds and schedule changes.

If codes run short mid-semester, contact sales support immediately to prepare and upload an additional codebank file — do not wait for the next scheduled review.

FTP access is managed internally by the sales support team. Reps do not need to access the FTP site directly — submit setup requests through the normal sales support process.

Pricing

One standard price is loaded into Kortext which equals to our direct to bookstore price plus shipping and handling.

LMS Integration

Kortext delivers content through major learning management systems including Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace (D2L), and Moodle. Students access their materials directly within the LMS on Day 1 without needing to visit a separate site.

If a school's IT team raises questions about LMS integration or SSO setup, direct them to [email protected].

Student Code Redemption

Kortext uses a voucher code model. Once a school adopts a product through Kortext, students access their code as follows:

  1. Student logs into their Kortext bookshelf (via the LMS or directly at kortext.com)
  2. Student clicks on their course material and selects "Reveal your access code"
  3. Student copies the code and follows the link to the SI platform to redeem it
  4. Access is granted immediately upon redemption

If a student reports they cannot see their code or the reveal button, direct them to [email protected] or the school's bookstore/library contact.

Billing Process

Kortext provides Science Interactive with monthly usage reports and remits payment directly to SI based on codes redeemed. There is no additional requirement from a bookstore or instructor to send enrollment information or reporting.

If discrepancies arise, contact [email protected] with the course details and expected vs. reported enrollment counts.

CRM Process

Mark the 'Primary Order Method' on your opportunity as Voucher/Redemption Code and designate Kortext as the option for 'Codes Distributed By.' This ensures codes will be loaded in the right system prior to class start and confirms that no purchase order should be expected.

Subsequent Semesters

Before the start of each new semester, sales support will review all class starts marked with "Kortext" as the distribution method and upload codebank files in quantities that exceed the enrollment numbers reviewed in the CRM.

Reps should use CRM tasks to flag enrollment changes or course cancellations as early as possible so that codebank quantities can be adjusted before the semester upload.

Accessibility & Platform Features

Kortext holds a 100% gold ASPIREreview score for accessibility — the highest available rating — and conforms to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Key features include:

  • Read-aloud / text-to-speech (available on Windows, Android, and iOS apps)
  • Compatibility with screen readers including JAWS, NV Access, TalkBack, and VoiceOver
  • Text translation into 130+ languages
  • Rich note-taking, highlighting, and bookmarking tools
  • Offline access via the Kortext app

These features make Kortext a strong recommendation for schools with accessibility mandates, DEI initiatives, or diverse international student populations.
