  • Instructor Dashboard and Introductory Content
  • Experiments and Assessments

• Introductory Content - The McGraw Hill lessons have limited introductory content. They include a list of key concepts and an overview, which are meant to provide introductory information. A "before you start" section with key techniques may also be included. There are no obvious learning objectives within the lesson. The overview is brief, and is likely developed under the assumption the student is pairing this with textbook reading or a lecture.
  • For the demo lesson reviewed, the introductory content was eight sentences long.
    
• Assessments - The McGraw Hill lessons include minimal assessments in their standard form. The questions included typically pertain to creating a hypothesis, an experimental strategy, what is done in the experimentation, and a conclusion. Students can have multiple attempts to answer these correctly. The assessments incorporated as part of the activity are not graded - grading is solely dependent on completion of the virtual lab. There are no long answer or evaluation-type assessments in the lab itself. If instructors want additional questions, they must be developed by the instructor from the question bank that is provided.
  
• Experiments - Experiments are set up in a point and click format with minimal opportunity to make mistakes. Mistakes can be made when inputting data but not actually when progressing through the lab.  It appears that they are set up such that all students get the same answer. In contrast, our most recent digital developments have multiple possible answers to prevent students from cheating.
  
• Dissections - McGraw Hill offers a virtual eye dissection. More dissections are available through their A&P Revealed program. This program includes a virtual fetal pig, cat, and cadaver. The set-up of these dissections is very similar to the Biodigital virtual dissection. For more information, review this video.  
  
• Discipline Offerings
  • McGraw Hill has an extensive number of labs covering A&P, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Physics.
    • That being said, in some cases, there are some major concepts missing. For example, redox reactions are a key concept in Chemistry that are missing from the content.
      
    • McGraw Hill DOES have the most robust offering for a digital microbiology lab.    
      
  • McGraw Hill advertises labs for Environmental Science, Botany, Nutrition, Genetics, Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, and Botany. However, if you review the list of labs available for these disciplines, it brings you to the generic information for biology. In reality, there are only about 3 - 4 relevant labs for these disciplines, not enough for a full semester.
    
  • McGraw Hill does not offer Pharmacy Technician, Geology, GOB, Organic Chemistry, or Forensics.
