Overview
Covering topics from DNA replication to advanced molecular biology techniques like CRISPR, our new digital Genetics labs present clear and concise exercises that will allow students to understand the basic principals of genetic techniques. The SI Genetics content was designed to provide students and faculty with improved digital learning resources to increase student learning outcomes and improve the overall student experience. SI Genetics is Quality Matters certified.
Course Level
Our Genetics content is designed to support majors students taking genetics courses as part of a degree sequence. It can also be customized into Biology and Microbiology courses to support topics in Genetics.

Interactive Introductory Content
- Every lab incorporates at least one interactive (animation, summary image, interactive activity, etc.) in the Exploration to increase student engagement with the curriculum.
- These are designed to blend seamlessly into the curriculum and are always called out ahead of time in the paragraph prior with directions as to how to interact with the item.

Digital Experiments
- All eight Genetics lessons leverage digital experiments to allow students to perform complex and typically expensive genetic techniques.
- The digital lessons use a mix of internally developed and Beyond Labz labs.
- Lessons using Beyond Labz are: DNA Extraction, Amplification, and Analysis, Phylogenetics, and Patterns of Inheritance.
Recombinant DNA, CRISPR, and Genetic Engineering
- This lesson focuses on the importance of genetic engineering and techniques used to genetically modify organisms.
- The techniques covered in this lesson are highly relevant and represent some of the most modern advances in Genetics. In fact, the developers of the CRISPR technique won the Nobel Prize in 2020!
- In Experiment 1, students create recombinant DNA and amplify that DNA in bacteria.
- In Experiment 2, students will create a guide RNA sequence to use for CRISPR.
- This lab should be really exciting to our instructors, and can serve as a great gateway into the rest of the genetics content.
- Cloud is WCAG 2.1 compliant.
- All videos are closed captioned.
- All images include Alt Tags.
- Interactives, including digital experiments, are all designed to be screen reader compatible.
Competition
Carolina
- Do not offer a genetics discipline.
- They do offer a subset of labs that we include in genetics, but not the full depth of content coverage.

- List a genetics discipline, but is really a repurpose of their biology content.
- Include multiple labs on the same topic, while missing other key topics.
- Topics like karyotyping, phylogenetics, and CRISPR are not covered by McGraw Hill.
Labster
- Does not offer genetics content.
